How to Register a .pk or .com.pk Domain

A domain name is your business address on the internet. For a Pakistani business, a .pk or .com.pk name tells customers right away that you are local. But the registration steps, prices, and rules are not always clear, and some websites describe them differently.

This guide explains how to register a .pk or .com.pk domain, what it costs, how to renew or move it, and what to check before you pay. We used PKNIC’s own pages wherever we could, and we say so when sources disagree.

What Are .pk and .com.pk Domains?

.pk is the country domain for Pakistan, and it is managed by PKNIC. Under .pk there are several endings, each meant for a type of user. PKNIC’s domain structure page lists them like this:

EndingMeant for
.com.pkGeneral business or individual
.biz.pkGeneral business, promotional
.net.pkNetwork related business
.org.pkNonprofit organizations
.web.pkWebsites
.fam.pkFamily and individuals
.edu.pkEducational institutes
.gov.pkGovernment of Pakistan

Most businesses choose .com.pk or plain .pk. The .edu.pk and .gov.pk endings are restricted, so a normal business cannot use them.

Why a .pk Domain Helps Your Business

Google’s guide on managing sites for different countries says country domains give a strong signal to users and search engines that a site is meant for a certain country. That page does not name .pk, but .pk is Pakistan’s country domain, so the same idea applies.

The same page lists a downside: a country domain can target only a single country. If you plan to sell worldwide, a .com may suit you better, or you can use both. A local domain can also support your local SEO work.

How Much Does a .pk or .com.pk Domain Cost?

According to PKNIC, the fee is PKR 2,100 per year for registrants based in Pakistan. PKNIC says prices rose by PKR 300 per domain per year on 1 August 2026, up from PKR 1,800. Registrants or registrars outside Pakistan pay $15.99 per domain per year.

PKNIC also says fees are charged on a two year basis and can be paid for up to ten years. So expect to pay for two years at a time, which would be about PKR 4,200 for a domain at the Pakistan price. Confirm the exact amount at checkout, because the page calls the fee “per year” and “biennial” in the same breath.

Resellers may add their own fees, so compare the total before you buy.

Before You Register: Choose the Right Name

PKNIC says you are free to choose any name, with some limits. You cannot take a name already in use, or one that is prohibited or reserved. You are also responsible for making sure your choice does not infringe someone else’s rights.

Two more points matter.

A name cannot be changed after registration. PKNIC says the domain name cannot be modified, so check your spelling twice.

ICANNWiki, a general reference site, adds technical limits: names can be up to 63 characters per label, names directly under .pk need at least four characters, and names cannot start with a dash or contain two dashes in a row. It also says names can be refused if they infringe a registered trade name. Because this is a secondary source, check PKNIC’s current rules if your name is close to the limits.

Tips for picking a name:

  1. Keep it short and easy to say aloud.
  2. Match your business name, since customers search for it.
  3. Avoid numbers and dashes, which are easy to mistype.
  4. Check that no other company uses a similar brand name.

How to Register a .pk or .com.pk Domain: Step by Step

You have two routes: register directly with PKNIC, or use a reseller or hosting company.

Option 1: Register Directly with PKNIC

PKNIC’s registration page gives these steps.

  1. Check availability using the domain search on the PKNIC homepage.
  2. Log in to your .pk account. If you do not have one, create it first.
  3. Open the Billing menu, choose “Add Domain Credits,” and pay with an option offered there. PKNIC’s help page lists bank draft or cheque, prepaid cards, and credit card.
  4. Open the Register Domain menu, choose “Register Domains,” and complete the registration.

PKNIC says its zone files update every few hours, so new domains usually go live quickly.

Option 2: Use a Reseller or Hosting Company

PKNIC says you can buy directly or through authorized channel partners and resellers. It also says resellers are independent companies with no ownership link to PKNIC. This route is convenient if you want your domain, hosting, and website from one provider.

One example is Hostinger, which in a support article (updated July 2026) says a .pk domain can take up to 30 working days to be fully registered through its partner registrar, and that you cannot change nameservers until activation finishes. Ask any reseller how long activation takes before you buy.

What About Documents?

This is where sources disagree. PKNIC’s registration pages we read do not list any required documents. Hostinger says you do not need to meet any specific residency or legal requirements. ICANNWiki, however, says applicants must provide identity documents, such as a NADRA ID for Pakistani nationals.

The safe approach: keep your CNIC and, for a company, your registration papers and NTN ready, in case your registrar asks. Ask your chosen provider before you pay.

Register in Your Business Name

Some owners let a web developer register the domain in the developer’s name. This can cause trouble later. PKNIC says the domain holder is responsible for keeping contact information up to date, and transfers need approval from the registered owner.

So register the domain under your own business or company name, use an email address you will always have, and store the login details safely. If you work with a developer, your website development agreement should say you own the domain.

How to Renew a .pk Domain

PKNIC’s renewal page says invoices are generally issued a few weeks before expiry. You can pay in these ways:

Online through your account, under Billing and Invoices.

By credit or prepaid card, under Billing and Pay Domains.

Through an agent, such as an ISP, reseller, or domain company, which can pay for you.

By cheque or bank draft payable to “PKNIC (PVT) Ltd,” posted to PKNIC’s Lahore office. Cash is not accepted.

The page does not explain what happens when a domain expires or whether there is a grace period. Do not wait to find out. Renew early, and contact PKNIC at staff@pknic.net.pk if you have questions. An expired domain can take your website and email offline.

How to Transfer a .pk Domain to Another Registrar

How to Register a .pk or .com.pk Domain: PKNIC Guide for Businesses

You may want to move to a new provider. PKNIC’s change registrar page gives these rules.

A domain can only be moved if it has not expired.

For a company, you need a written authorization from the head of the organization, not an agent or technical contact. It must be on company letterhead, signed and stamped, and name both the current and new account IDs. A clear copy of the signer’s CNIC is also needed.

For an individual, you need an affidavit with your full contact details, the account IDs, and a CNIC copy. It must be on Rs. 100 stamp paper and attested by an oath commissioner.

You must post the original documents to PKNIC’s Lahore office. Scanned copies are not accepted. PKNIC then verifies by phone, and the move takes about 3 to 4 business days after verification.

The page lists no transfer fee, but confirm this with PKNIC.

After You Register: Connect Your Domain

Registration is only the first step. Next, you point the domain to your website host by setting nameservers or DNS records, and set up business email. If you use an online store, our Shopify web design team can connect your domain and design the store.

Then set up the basics that help search visibility. Redirect the www and non www versions to one version, use HTTPS, and add the site to Google Search Console. A technical SEO review checks these for you, and good SEO optimization builds on a clean setup.
